must...not...open

This mean, mean envelope arrived in the mail yesterday.  It taunts me.  How could Ideal Poultry know that this spring we won't be settled, won't be able to order chicks and hold them, fuzzy and peeping, for just a minute after chasing them hilariously around their baby pool in the basement?  They couldn't.  It's not their fault.

But I want you to know this, Ideal Poultry.  I am a farm girl now.  Deep in my soul is the smell of the soil, the satisfaction of feeding my family with my hands.  Wherever I go, I'll build that type of life around me.  (Sure hope the neighbors approve.)  This is why, if we're going, I figure we need to go.  So that we can begin to rebuild our severed connection with the earth.  I am a woman without chickens, without a garden.  It's almost akin, for me, to being without a soul.   I say let the transplant shock begin, so we can get it over with and begin to grow roots again.

So this is me, down but not broken, silhouetted against the sunset, with my Baby Chick Price List clutched in the fist I wave defiantly at the sky.  As Ideal Poultry is my witness, I will have chickens again!

Wow. I have got to get out of here before the seed catalogs start coming.

urban chickens are trendy now. not even kidding. you might happily find your community to be open to chickens! asheville allows them in city limits as long as you keep the coop clean and 50 feet away from neighbors, and don't have roosters.

I agree with Asheville on the roosters. Sheesh. Our neighbor here has some and MAN are they loud. Especially the one that's adopted our wake-up call as his personal duty.
