found

I was lost.  I had been merrily driving down I-20, talking to my sister, when my phone battery died.  Father Bird, usually behind me, and with no way to contact me now, pulled in front of me to show me he wanted me to follow him off the freeway for lunch.  Down in the town, the light that had been green for him turned red for me, and I lost the reassuring view of his Uhaul's back end.

And so I had driven straight in the direction I'd last seen him go, when the light turned green again.  Urban Texas turned into suburban and then semi-rural Texas amazingly quickly, and I finally decided he couldn't have come out here for lunch and pulled off the road.

I couldn't call him, because my phone battery was charging and still too weak.  I whipped open my laptop to try to find his GPS signal, but there was no hope of a connection.  He couldn't find me if my phone was no longer sending out my location.  What do I do now, I thought.  Where the heck did he go?

After panicking for a few minutes, I thought my situation out.  His phone battery wasn't dead, and if I could get to somewhere with free WiFi, I could find him.  I hauled my ponderous vehicle off the gravelly-muddy shoulder of the road, and turned back toward town.

McDonald's, I thought.  I know they have WiFi.  Wendy's, maybe.  There they sat, right next to each other.  Bingo.  I gingerly pulled up in the shopping center parking lot (everything must be done gingerly with a packed-to-the-gills trailer behind you) and looked for a place to park my long beast, close enough to the restaurants to connect to their signal.  And, behold!  There was Father Bird's long beast, parked in my target position.  I pulled up right next to him, and there he sat, phone in one hand, laptop open in his lap, looking for my signal.

And truly, we had found each other.

I love technology! I er just wish I knew better how to use it.

Yucca is very edible. The flower petals taste like mild lettuce, and the roots are kind of starchy and fry well.

Oh, I remember stuff.

Hey, so if we got lost out here (in all these woods, maybe?) at least we wouldn't want for salad!

I lost my husband while on vacation with another family this summer. I was driving one car while chatting with the wife. He was driving the other car while chatting with the husband. In some random twist of fate, he had all 4 cell phones in the car with him. It was probably 10 minutes before I realized that I hadn't seen him on the interstate in a while, and then I had to find a telephone somewhere and start calling cell phones. A very stressful few minutes!
