who was the genius...

who decided building a sidewalk out of boards was a good idea?  I suppose it's possible that the boards originally made a flat, smooth surface that resembled a sidewalk, but in the years since then, the boards have...shrunk.

Which occasionally I have to take scissors, a spade, and gloves and do this with:

So that I get this:

Which isn't even really that great of a reward after all that work. 

Maybe, at some point, I should quit yanking up the grass and start yanking up the boards.  Concrete, flagstone, something besides board-space-board-space-board...

But I'd like to meet the person(s) who thought boards were a good idea.  Maybe I could hand him a pair of gloves.
