newsprint
Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 8:27AM The other day we nearly ran out of newsprint.

As soon as we knew that there were only a few feet of precious "roll paper" left, skirmishes began to break out. "I want to make a Thanksgiving banner!" "No! I need to use it for patterns!" "But I want to make wrapping paper!" Alas. We are a family addicted to blank newsprint paper. I suppose there are a whole lot of things that are more damaging and expensive to be addicted to, so in the long run, maybe our addiction is okay.
Do you know about newsprint roll ends? Has your family discovered the joy of endless, cheap paper? Only the very ends are as wrinkled as the paper in the picture. Mostly it's just smooth, gray, empty, clean paper, tidily rolled all up and sitting in a corner waiting for you to...
decorate for use as a birthday party tablecloth
make paper mache hats and pinatas
dip cookie cutters in paint and create yards of wrapping paper
draw endlessly detailed maps of fantasy countries
...and anything else you can think up to use paper for. How did life go on in our house before we discovered it? I honestly do not know. The day we nearly ran out, in order to prevent mutiny in the ranks, I called Father Bird straight up and asked him to go to the newspaper office and get us some more. It was $2 a roll, and, feeling spendy, he brought us three.
And as we rolled it out down the hall and attacked it with crayons, I heaved a long sigh. Mutiny averted. For now.

I bought a roll of butcher paper at costco for $20. I will definitely have to pick up some newsprint rolls-much more economical.
I used to buy butcher paper, and it's great for painting, since it's got that plastic on the back, but for everyday crayon use, the newsprint is cheaper, and it's recyclable. :)
Love those end rolls of newspaper! We use it for everything too! My daughter loves to think of pin the ___ on the ___ for all our parties. Candle on the cupcake...feathers on the turkey...flag on the castle. I don't know what I did before we discovered it. I tell everyone they have to go the newspaper to get the best paper!
